Where It All Began...

Empodocles & Hippocrates

Empodocles, in 444 B.C. believed personalities were impacted by the relationship or exposure to external elements - Fire, Earth, Water, Air.

Marston & DiSC

Hipocrates, in 400 B.C. believed personalities were impacted Personalities impacted by balance of internal fluids - Phlegmatic, Sanguine, Choleric, Melencoly.

In 1924, William Moulton Marston, a physiological psychologist with a Ph.D. from Harvard began to study the concepts of a person's will, sense of power, and the effect this has on personality and human behavior.

Marston’s theory of behavioral expression of emotions was categorized into four primary types, derived from self perceptions in relationship to their own environment. These four types were labeled by Marston became what we now know as Dominance (D), Influence (I), Steady (S), and Compliant (C).

His work has been widely recognized in the field of psychology and ultimately led to the commonly used DISC Profile today. His book, "Emotions of Normal People" was published in 1928 and presented his findings. He published a second book in 1931 titled, "DISC, Integrative Psychology". His findings in these two books about the measure of human behavior and consciousness led to the theory behind the later development of the actual DiSC test.
